On Saturday 27th June 2015 the Minister of Natural Resources, PSD Chairman Dr Vincent BIRUTA laid a foundation stone for the construction of a model green village at Kabyaza site, Mukamira Sector, Nyabihu District.
Construction of a Model Green Village
This village will comprise 200 houses for vulnerable families to be relocated from high-risk zones and will be constructed through the Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change in north-western Rwanda through Community Based Adaptation (RV3CBA) project under the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Speaking at the ceremony Chairman Dr Vincent BIRUTA said that this model Green village is different from other ordinary villagessince, it will not only change the lives of beneficiaries but will also reduce the pressure on the use of Natural Resources.
“This green village is different from other villages since they will be equipped with lightning rod,water tanks to harvest the rain water from the house roof tops,the solar energy will be installed and occupants will be given cows that will be reared in communal cowsheds to facilitate bio-gas energy generation; all of this will reduce the pressure on natural resources use and change their lives.” said the Minister .

This ceremony was also attended by different Stakeholders and partners in the Natural Resources Sector. Among those who attended was the UN_Resident Coordinator in Rwanda Mr. Lamin Manneh who appreciated the Government initiatives in environmental protection and Natural resources management and promised on behalf of the UN family continued support to construct green villages in other parts of the country. Local residents hailed the construction of this village, saying that it will transform lives of many homeless families affected by climate change effect like floods and landslide.
“We are thankful to our Government that this village will be a sustainable solution to homeless people from the high risk zones and we expect an improvement in their lives because they will have all the necessary nearby their homes” said Nyandwi Abdu, a local resident.
